Navalny’s poisoning: UK to take forward anti-Russian sanctions

The UK together with the international partners will promote the sanctions against the Russians involved in the poisoning of oppositionist Alexei Navalny as Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab stated.

“The UK stands side by side with our German and French partners in our response to the abhorrent poisoning of Alexey Navalny…We will work together with our international partners to take forward sanctions targeting Russian officials and others who are considered responsible for this crime as well those involved in the development of the Novichok chemical weapon programme,” Raab stated.

Earlier, Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated that the sanctions could be imposed on the Russian government if it fails to clarify the circumstances surrounding the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalny in the next few days.

On August 20, Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny was urgently hospitalized during his return to Moscow from Tomsk. He felt bad during the flight and the plane was urgently landed in Omsk. Alexei Navalny was put on a ventilator. Later, the doctors reported that Navalny was not poisoned. The head physician claimed that his metabolism has been impaired.

On September 2, a special laboratory of the Bundeswehr has conducted a toxicological test using samples from Alexei Navalny and came to the conclusion that the Russian politician was poisoned with a substance of neuro-paralytic agent from the Novichok group.

On September 23, Navalny was discharged from the hospital of the German Charité clinic.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny claimed that President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin is personally involved in his recent poisoning.
