NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg states that the NATO-Ukraine Commission is taking place at an important time for European security.

Stoltenberg noted that the meeting in the NATO-Ukraine Commission is "a timely opportunity to exchange assessments of the situation, express strong political and practical support of NATO member states towards Ukraine and ensure coordination before the diplomatic meeting with Russia."

"I welcome the fact that Russia has agreed to our proposal to hold a NATO-Russia meeting later this week, it is a positive signal. We will focus on issues of European security, transparency related to military activities, risk reduction and arms control," the Secretary General said.

As it was reported, on December 10, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned Russia that its attack on Ukraine would come at a high price called for a return to a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

On the same day, Russia offered NATO countries ways to defuse tensions in Europe, which arose in particular because of Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry called on Washington to join Russia's unilateral moratorium on the deployment of ground-based medium and shorter-range missiles in Europe, agree on and introduce the necessary measures to verify the implementation of mutual commitments.

Last week, Russia released a list of security proposals it wants to discuss with Western countries. These included NATO's promise to renounce all military activity in Eastern Europe and Ukraine.

Later, State Department Spokesman Ned Price stated that the United States of America and European allies will prepare their list of concerns in response to Russian demands for NATO.
