NATO has commented on Russia been supplying battle tanks to Serbia, Moscow's long-time ally in the Balkans. The Voice of America wondered how the Alliance would respond to that fact.
“We appreciate our partnership with Serbia and fully respect its declared military neutrality. We also respect the sovereign decision of our partners when it comes to the security arrangements they make”, reads the written response as quoted by European Western Balkans.
A well-informed source in the NATO claimed that not only the Alliance was aware of this process, but it helped Belgrade reform and strengthen its security forces and respective institutions, too.
“Serbia and NATO worked together to train Iraqi military doctors and support the Iraqi armed forces. NATO and Serbia are also cooperating in preparation for natural disasters such as forest fires and floods”, the response reads.
In this regard, NATO also reiterated that a sovereign state is quite entitled to its own choice of arms suppliers. In September, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg claimed that the Alliance did not mind this process, showing "full respect" to a sovereign state's security arrangements.
