Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov states that he believes in possibility holding of the local elections in occupied Donbas this autumn only for 50% as liga.net reported.
Former U.S. Special Representative on Ukraine Kurt Volker earlier stated that he did not believe in the possibility of holding local elections in occupied Donbas at all.
Danilov commented on his words: “I have great respect to Mr. Volker but the disengagement takes place only on condition of reciprocity. If one side does not step back then another also does not. Another matter that Volker does not believe in the holding of elections for 100%. I can say that I also do not believe in it, but for 50%.”
According to him, he would like, “firstly, deploy our border guards at our Ukrainian border; secondly, organizer the joint patrolling of the territories with members of the local communities.”
“It is the experience of Croatia. It was varied. I cannot say that the groups consisting of four people had no disputes. But we should head to it,” he added.
Danilov stressed that the elections should take place only with the observation of the Constitution of Ukraine.
On February 15, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine agreed to joint border control with representatives of the uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as a condition for holding local elections in Donbas.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky announced his readiness for dialogue with the population that lives in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, but not with the so-called ‘power’ in the occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk region.
