Yuriy Vitrenko, head of the board of NJSC Naftogaz, said that the company is studying options for alternative gas supplies to Ukraine. This was discussed in an interview with Vitrenko on Radio Liberty.
"In addition, it's still a small secret, but we are now working on alternative gas supplies (to Ukraine - ed.), not only from the European market, not only from traditional sources ... It's no secret that and when I was Acting Minister of Energy, I met in some countries of the Middle East at the highest level, "Vitrenko said.
At the same time, he has so far refused to name specific countries from which it will be possible to import blue fuel to Ukraine. The head of NJSC Naftogaz hinted that it could be about partner countries from the Middle East region.
In addition, the head of the board of Naftogaz ruled out the possibility that Ukraine will buy gas from Russia directly.
Ukraine has not bought gas from Russia since 2015, replacing it with reverse gas supplies from Europe.
At the end of December 2019, Russia and Ukraine signed a new agreement on the transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian GTS. Together with a 5-year transit contract, a protocol on gas cooperation was signed, which provides for the possibility of direct supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine at a discount from the price of the European hub (NCG), depending on volumes.
This month, the US and Germany agreed that it is in the interests of Ukraine and Europe to continue the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory after 2024.
The Kremlin is ready to discuss the extension of gas transit through Ukraine after 2024.
