Chechen blogger Mamikhan Umarov, known for the criticism of leader of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, was murdered in Austria and it sent shockwaves in the OSCE as OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir reported on Twitter.
“Shocked by the murder of blogger Mamikhan Umarov on 4 July near Vienna, Austria. Umarov was known for his blog channel Anzor Tscharto Beck Martin,” Desir noted.
He urged to hold a swift and thorough investigation of this crime.
According to RBK, Umarov was a witness in the case of the murder of Amina Okueva – the Ukrainian public activist and Donbas veteran.
On July 4, Umarov was killed in the suburbs of Vienna with a headshot. He was the consistent critic of Kadyrov.
Umarov was the citizen of Russia and he lived in Austria since 2005. He asked to provide political asylum in Austria.
APA reported on July 5 that two Chechen citizens were detained in Austria; one of them is the supposed murderer of Umarov.
As we reported, French police believe that the killing of a blogger from the disputed Russian region of Chechnya in a French hotel room was "politically motivated”.
