Merkel to visit Russia at Putin’s invitation

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a working visit to the Russian Federation on January 11 at the invitation of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. This was reported on the website of the Kremlin’s press service.

The sides will discuss the situation in Syria, Libya and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which flared up after the death of Iranian General Qasem Suleimani in Baghdad as a result of an airstrike executed by US troops.

Merkel and Putin will also discuss the situation in Donbas, the implementation of Minsk agreements and the Normandy Summit arrangements, which took place on December 9, 2019, in Paris.

As we reported earlier, today, the NATO Council will convene for an extraordinary meeting in view of the escalating situation in Iraq. The decision was made by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Interfax reported, citing NATO official in Brussels.

"The North Atlantic Council will examine the situation in the region (in the Middle East – ed.) on Monday, January 6, 2020," a NATO official said.

According to him, Stoltenberg’s decision to hold a meeting of the Council was made after consulting with allies.
