According to Merkel, her absence from the Crimean Platform summit on August 23 does not indicate a desire to please Russia, and the replacement of the German representative is connected only with the events in Afghanistan.
“No, this does not indicate that (desire to please the Russian Federation, - ed.). I clearly said that we consider the annexation of Crimea a violation of international law. Nothing has changed here. The fact that our minister will not come now is not connected with our relations with Russia, but only with the current situation in Afghanistan. Therefore, we are now sending here our Minister of Energy and Economy, who has the same rank as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, "Merkel said.
Merkel also noted that her visit to Ukraine today is a farewell as Federal Chancellor.
Earlier Chancellor Angela Merkel said during her visit to Ukraine that Germany is ready to support sanctions against Nord Stream 2 if Russia starts using the pipeline as a weapon.
