A number of MEPs sent a letter to the Vice-President of the European Commission, and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, demanding to respond to the unprecedented actions against Hungarians in Ukraine.
Among the MEPs who addressed Borrell are: Andrea Bocskor (EPP), Andor Deli (EPP), Tamás Deutsch (EPP), Kinga Gál (EPP), Enikő Győri (EPP), András Gyürk (EPP), Balázs Hidvéghi (EPP) ), György Hölvényi (EPP), Lívia Járóka (EPP), Ádám Kósa (EPP), Edina Tóth (EPP), László Trócsányi (EPP), Loránt Vincze (EPP), Iuliu Winkler (EPP), as NewsOne reports.
“On November 30, coordinated actions were taken against Hungarian organizations in Ukraine by Ukrainian law enforcement bodies. Dozens of armed special forces from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) invaded the apartment of Laszlo Brenzovich, President of the Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association and a former MP of the Verkhovna Rada, as well as offices of Hungarian party and charitable foundations to hold searches. The search warrant was based on trumped-up political accusations violating the rights of the Hungarian minority in order to end the activities of the Hungarian minority and intimidate Hungarians in Ukraine and their leaders.
Since 2017, there have been cases of systematic violations of the rights of a national minority (which began with the Law on Education and the Law on the State Language), hostile rhetoric against Hungarians was noted in the media, hate crimes, marches, provocations by nationalist paramilitary groups and the Myrotvorets website and even arson and a bomb explosion at the headquarters of the Hungarian party. The list is too long to mention everything,” the text of the appeal says.
In this regard, the MEPs demand from the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy a written answer to two questions:
- When will the European Commission act and not hush up these cases that threaten the existence of a national minority?
- What action will the Vice President / High Representative take to prevent such intimidating actions from happening again?
Earlier, the deputy head of the Transcarpathian Regional Council, a member of the Transcarpathian Hungarian KMKSZ party Iosip Bort spoke about the situation with searches carried out by the Ukrainian Security Service in the offices of one of the leaders of the Hungarian community Vasyl Brenzovich.
