The five-year ban on the broadcast of 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK is a violation of freedom of speech. This was stated by Dietmar Köster, Member of the European Parliament from Germany and member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament.
"Broadcasting of these three TV channels has been banned for five years by President Zelensky's decision. This is a violation of freedom of speech. First of all, I would like to emphasize that freedom of expression, freedom of speech and independent journalism are fundamental rights of democracy and European values. Freedom of the media, freedom of expression and freedom of speech are essential for the functioning of society and democracy," Köster said.
The politician noted that President Zelensky's decision restricts the right to freedom of speech, as it significantly restricts public access to the media and the right to receive information through any media. In particular, this is stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"Banning the broadcasting of these three TV channels is also a serious threat to hundreds of media workers and journalists, as they may lose their jobs. Journalists are not allowed to do their jobs. This affects the diversity of the media in Ukraine. Part of the population will have less access to information. I agree with the condemnation of these actions by the International Federation of Journalists - they resemble politically motivated suppression of freedom of speech," he concluded.
