President Volodymyr Zelensky met with the head of British Secret Intelligence Service MI6 during his visit to London. A Member of the European Parliament of 2014-2020 Nathan Gill stated this.
He noted that the British press had not reported about this meeting.
“I think it is very strange that the Head of our Secret Intelligence Service met with your President - usually negotiations with the president are the prime minister’s responsibility. The topic of the meeting is also strange. It is a very important issue for me personally - freedom of the media. They discussed the creation of an organization for counteraction to what they interpret as fake news. But what is fake and what is true is very subjective when not all facts are immediately available to all people,” the ex-MEP said.
He stressed that as an advocate of media freedom in the United Kingdom, he would be shocked if British intelligence intervened, for example, in the work of BBC or ITV because Britain needs a free and fair media for a democracy to function.
“Everything is the same for Ukraine. It is critical that the media - all without exception - are not subjected to sanctions or government pressure. You need media freedom so that your or other TV channels could cover news, and so that people can make their own conclusions. And I, frankly, would be very disappointed if the government or intelligence service or anyone else in my country felt that they had the power and the desire to silence the press,” Gill said.
