Member of the European Parliament Rebecca Harms urged politicians and football fans to boycott the World Cup in Russia, as she told in an interview with Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, according to DW.
She noted that Russia is not the country to hold a football championship. She said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will get too much attention”.
“He bathes in the spotlights in the presence of international guests and continues his anti-democratic policies,” MEP said reminding of Russia’s meddling in Syria and Ukraine. She also criticized Russia’s attitude to opposition and minorities.
Moreover, Rebecca Harms criticized the FIFA as the organization ignored the accusations about corruption and doping in Russia and didn’t move the competition elsewhere.
