Ukrainian authorities must understand that blocking 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK TV channels is a wrong and very dangerous path. This was stated by a member of the Italian Senate Roberto Rampi.
“When I first heard this news, I was very surprised. I do not believe that any state can close any type of information system - a TV, newspaper or Internet channel, or something else. Definitely, you cannot close everything completely and you cannot close it without a thorough legal investigation. Pluralism of points of view is the footing of democracy. Some very critical, and maybe dangerous or unacceptable for someone things can be voiced here....Therefore, the ability to express your point of view is fundamental for democracy, "he said.
Rampi believes that all Western and European countries should put pressure on Ukraine so that it understands that pluralism and freedom of the media and speech is something that should not be debated and that should not be threatened.
He also stressed that it is completely unacceptable for the countries of the West and the European Union to close the media, and it is all the more unacceptable to close the media without a court verdict. And it is very difficult to do it through the courts, the politician added.
“I think that Western politicians need to do something, they have to pressure firmly so that the Ukrainian authorities understand that this is a wrong and very dangerous path. We really believe that Ukraine is a very important country in which the power has repeatedly changed democratically, and it should not take this very dangerous path,” Rampi added.
