The Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life Party, MP Viktor Medvedchuk believes that Ukraine’s joining NATO will impede the process of reintegration of Donbas to Ukraine. He said this in conversation with journalists on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada.
“During the talks between Mr. Zelensky and NATO Secretary General Mr. Stoltenberg it was said that Ukraine is ready and Ukraine has actually taken the course for NATO. Why? Because all the latest sociological studies show that 41-42%, of the citizens of our country, the population, support NATO course and Ukraine’s NATO membership and 36-38% are in favor of non-aligned status. Actually, this is the position of our party, the Opposition Platform - For Life. We are strongly against joining NATO and we believe that a course the new government has chosen, which is headed by Mr. Zelensky, is a course of continuing the policy of Mr. Poroshenko, Groysman, Yatsenyuk, Parubiy. It led the country to a split, and after the split, the country’s decay also began, and this is an additional antagonism, this is a confrontation that will definitely be in the society,” the MP said.
“Because, as I said, according to sociological data, today there is no support of a course towards NATO by the majority of our citizens. Moreover, there is still a very serious question regarding today's statements and today's readiness, according to Mr. Zelensky, for implementing the course of joining NATO. It is a question of the return of Donbas to Ukraine and Ukraine to Donbas. You know that the attitude of citizens who live in uncontrolled territories, the citizens of Ukraine, I emphasize this, is a categorical opposition to Ukraine’s joining NATO. Therefore, today this is also the starting point that will interfere and will not contribute to the integration of these territories into Ukraine and the return of people. Mr. Zelensky was going to influence their consciousness, so that they realize they need to live in a single country, and it is necessary to do so, and as our peace plan also envisages, but the course towards NATO will interfere with these processes, it will contradict the desire of the authorities to return Donbas to Ukraine,” Medvedchuk emphasized.
