Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has extended house arrest to the Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life party and MP Viktor Medvedchuk until September 7. The politician reacted to this decision and said that he was going to appeal against the illegal court decision.
"We will definitely appeal the decision of the Pechersk District Court in Kyiv Court of Appeal," Medvedchuk said.
The opposition politician's lawyer added that Medvedchuk's defense will appeal against this court decision, since it is not only unfair but also illegal.
"Of course, the defense will appeal this decision, since it considers it not only unfair, but also illegal. It is worth mentioning here that, in addition to investigating judge going beyond what the prosecutor asked of him, the judge suddenly decided that he would take the decision, although the Criminal Procedure Code forbids him. There is also a violation of the procedure of considering the prosecutor's motion. The Criminal Procedure Code clearly establishes the stage of examination of documents. The investigating judge decided to skip this stage. He decided not to study seven volumes of materials given him by the prosecutor. What guided the investigating judge when making such a decision is still not clear to the defense, because today, as you heard, only the operative part was announced, and he will state the motives today after 5 pm. Of course, the defense will take these motives into account when preparing its appeal, "the lawyer said. cut by Viktor Medvedchuk.
The day before, the court decided to extend the investigation term in the case of Viktor Medvedchuk, Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life party.
First Deputy Prosecutor General Roman Hovda breached the law, having failed to submit in time a motion to extend the investigation period in the case of Viktor Medvedchuk.
Viktor Medvedchuk's defense filed motions for the recusation of the prosecutor and the judge, but they were refused. The Opposition Platform - For Life called the judge’s actions politically motivated and noted that he was acting on the orders of Bankova.
Conditions in the courtroom were close to torture - temperature +31 and high carbon dioxide content.
Viktor Medvedchuk said that there are no grounds for continuing his case and extending the measure of restraint.
He also said that since 2019, the authorities have been purposefully discrediting the Opposition Platform - For Life party. The situation worsened at the beginning of 2021, when Opposition Platform - For Life came out on top in all sociological ratings. Medvedchuk also noted that the government attracted nationalist groups to intimidate the party. More than 80 attacks on Opposition Platform - For Life activists have been recorded.
The authorities also closed three TV channels - 112 Ukraine, Newsone and Zik. The report of UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine which covers the period from February 1 to April 30 called such a decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky contradictory to international human rights standards.
