Chairman of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party, MP Viktor Medvedchuk said that he cannot pay the bail assigned by the court because his accounts and the accounts of his wife have been blocked by the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
"I could not pay this money because, as you know, the sanctions were illegally applied against me and my wife, by the decision of the National Security and Defense Council. All accounts, from which one could transfer the money, and the accounts, from which the money could be transferred from so as to pay the bail have been blocked. Yes, I have that kind of money, me and my family had it declared. Unfortunately, I can't use it", Medvedchuk said.
He also replied to the question whether there are people who can pay this money.
"Definitely, I think there are such people. I have enough friends to support me in this situation if necessary", Medvedchuk stressed.
On May 13, Pechersk District Court began to consider the case against the opposition figure. Earlier, lawyers claimed that the actions of Prosecutor General's Office and its chairperson Iryna Venedyktova against Medvedchuk were illegal.
The Opposition Platform - For Life party reacted to the opening of the case, saying that the government actions are blatant and cynical political reprisal over the opposition politician who stays true to his principles and, thus, has been showcasing the poor professionalism, vendibility and the anti-popular nature of the government
Medvedchuk added that whatever takes place is a political reprisal for his principal stance. "I state this: I am staying in Ukraine now, and I'm not going to flee the justice. I will keep on taking part in legal investigation actions, seeking justice for myself and all Ukrainian voters who trusted me with the high position of Ukraine's lawmaker", the politician said.
