Medvedchuk in court, July 2021

The current government, together with the Prosecutor's Office, exerted pressure to extend the detention under house arrest of the Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk. The opposition leader said this on air of Pershiy Nezalezhniy TV channel.

"Definitely, with such gross violations of the criminal procedural legislation, which we saw today, even taking into account the fact that only a short part of the decision was announced, there undoubtedly was pressure, there was pressure from the prosecutor's office, there was pressure from the authorities in order to prolong the term under house arrest. Because the goal of the authorities, I say again, it can be interpreted only on the basis of the recent decisions that were made, including in this court, on the extension of the pre-trial investigation time, because otherwise why is there a need to extend the terms of pre-trial investigation if the investigation still has a deadline until August 11? And this time, it was extended to six months.

That is, they have one task: to do everything in order to limit me as an opposition politician and my activities in the matters of exercising the powers of a lawmaker of Ukraine, who, in accordance with the Constitution, represents the interests of citizens of Ukraine. There is one goal: the fight against the opposition. The fight through illegal political repression and illegal criminal prosecution. Obviously, it was yesterday, the day before yesterday, this entire period of time, and, unfortunately, this policy of the authorities, the policy of the prosecutor's office continues. Our struggle will continue in exactly the same way. The struggle of the party, and the struggle of lawyers, and my struggle in defense of justice and protection of the interests of the law, which should triumph, and we believe in it, "Viktor Medvedchuk said.

Earlier, Pechersk District Court extended the house arrest for Medvedchuk until September 7. In addition, the day before, the court decided to extend the terms of the investigation in the case of Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk.

First Deputy Prosecutor General Roman Hovda breached the law, having failed to submit in time a motion to extend the investigation period in the case of Viktor Medvedchuk.

Viktor Medvedchuk's defense filed motions for the recusation of the prosecutor and the judge, but they were refused. The Opposition Platform - For Life called the judge’s actions politically motivated and noted that he was acting on the orders of Bankova.

Conditions in the courtroom were close to torture - temperature +31 and high carbon dioxide content.

Viktor Medvedchuk said that there are no grounds for continuing his case and extending the measure of restraint.

He also said that since 2019, the authorities have been purposefully discrediting the Opposition Platform - For Life party. The situation worsened at the beginning of 2021, when Opposition Platform - For Life came out on top in all sociological ratings. Medvedchuk also noted that the government attracted nationalist groups to intimidate the party. More than 80 attacks on Opposition Platform - For Life activists have been recorded.

The authorities also closed three TV channels - 112 Ukraine, Newsone and Zik. The report of UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine which covers the period from February 1 to April 30 called such a decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky contradictory to international human rights standards.
