The new law lifting parliamentary immunity was adopted in violation of the procedure provided by the law on the parliamentary rules and regulations and in violation of the Constitution. Viktor Medvedchuk, the Chairman of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party said this on the sidewalks of the parliamentary session on Tuesday, September 3.
"First, everything, happening now and what happened today regarding the cancellation of immunity and voting in the so-called second reading or final approval - this all happened in violation of the procedure provided by the law on regulations, it happened in violation of the Constitution. We have repeatedly reported that" Medvedchuk said.
He also reminded that representatives of the Opposition Platform - For Life party have repeatedly drawn attention to the issue of the representatives of the parliamentary majority.
"We voiced already that this cannot be done for one simple reason: until we (I mean Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada) give an answer to the comments made by the Constitutional Court in their conclusion before voting in both the first and second readings. They drew the attention of the MPs, and these appeals, these comments cannot be ignored in any way,” he said.
Medvedchuk noted that if the committee considered these issues and made a decision on them, then Rada, before approving the bill in the first reading, should have sent the findings of the committee to the Constitutional Court for assessment.
“They haven't done that before August 29, they held illegal committees now, so we think and it’s a principled position that we couldn’t have supported it for one simple reason: if this is spam of constitutional amendments that began today, or to be precise- it started on the first day of the parliamentary session on August 29, will continue, then not a damn thing will be left from the country's basic law," he predicts.
“The basic law and the Constitution of Ukraine is something that is unshakable,” the politician emphasized, noting that changes to the basic law should be made in full compliance with all the norms of the current legislation.
“Therefore, we did not support these changes, as we will not support many others, although, in fact, we agree with them, including those that are on the agenda. We believe that many issues under consideration must be regulated and they must be introduced in a separate part through amendments to the Constitution, but this must be done in full accordance with the parliamentary rules and regulations," he explained the position of the party.
In addition, Medvedchuk reminded the party’s political position on the abolition of immunity:
“We believe that the cancellation of the immunity of Ukraine’s MPs should take place along with the cancellation of the immunity of the President of Ukraine.”
