Ukraine's member of Parliament and Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk said that the criminal case against him was falsified in order to put pressure on the opposition, which does not agree with the course of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The opposition leader said this during a briefing before the meeting of Kyiv Court of Appeal, which will consider the appeal of Viktor Medvedchuk's lawers regarding the prolongation of his all-day house arrest, as Pershiy Nezalezhniy broadcasted.
"The situation is obvious. It is obvious that the criminal case was falsified with one purpose - to close the mouth of the opposition, to strike the Opposition Platform - For Life party. This is precisely what is indicated in the materials of the suspicion that Medvedchuk, who does not agree with the course of the president, and further in the text. That is, all this was done with one goal. This goal is strategic, this goal, which was addressed to me, to my colleague, as well as to the whole party Opposition Platform - For Life. This is to strike against opposition politicians. I am sure that they will not succeed with this, because the falsification will still become obvious, if not in today's court session, then in the next one, because there is enough data to reveal all these falsifications, all violations, all illegal and criminal actions of the authorities," said Victor Medvedchuk.
The opposition MP stressed that the court has every opportunity to make a legal and well-grounded decision.
"Both the court of first instance and today the court of appeal have every opportunity to consider this case and make, as you already asked, a lawful and well-grounded decision. And the issue is not in terms. The most important thing is that in the process of considering this case, the requirements of the law are fully observed and any decision that is made by the investigation and the prosecution authorities and the court must be justified, objective and lawful. This is what I count on. I and the lawyers, as well as the party as a whole, will seek this from the law enforcement system and the courts,” Viktor Medvedchuk said.
As it was reported earlier, on February 2, Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on sanctions against 112 Ukraine, NewsONE and ZiK TV channels. By this decree, he enforced the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on sanctions on the cancellation of the broadcasting licenses of the TV channels belonging to Taras Kozak (112 Ukraine, NewsOne, ZIK). According to the decree that is eligible since the moment of signature, the TV channels faced sanctions that will be active for five years. These sanctions make the broadcasting impossible.
On February 26, journalists of the TV channels illegally closed by President Volodymyr Zelensky united and created a new TV channel – Pershiy Nezalezhniy. The founders of the new media are a group of journalists who previously worked on the channels 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZiK. However, only an hour after the start of the broadcast, the authorities illegally disconnected the channel’s broadcasting.
Earlier, on February 19, the National Security and Defense Council imposed sanctions on eight people (three of them Ukrainians), including Viktor Medvedchuk, Chairman of the Opposition Platform for Life Political Council, and his wife, Oksana Marchenko.
On May 13, Kyiv court chose the restriction measure for Viktor Medvedchuk, the opposition MP and Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party. On July 9, the court extended the house arrest of Viktor Medvedchuk until September 7. The lawyers of the politician stated about the recusal of the judge Serhiy Vovk right after the end of the court session. However, the court declined the appeal on recusal of the judge and prosecutor.
Commenting on the situation, Viktor Medvedchuk stressed that his lawyers are fully prepared for the process of appealing against the measure of restraint and they have evidence that refutes the prosecution's accusation and prove the illegality of applying house arrest to him.
During the last months, world media, European politicians and experts published over 55,000 materials dedicated to the targeting of the opposition by the Ukrainian authorities.
