“U.S. authorities immediately took Manafort into custody and escorted him out of a packed courtroom, where his wife looked on during the hearing. The dramatic turn means that Manafort will have to prepare for two federal trials in the coming weeks -- one in Washington, and one in Virginia -- while confined to a jail cell,” the news agency reports.
The lawyers of Robert Mueller, the U.S. Special Counsel, stated that tried to interfere in witnesses’ cases.
“Manafort worked for me for a very short period of time. I feel bad for some people because they’ve gone back 12 years to find things about somebody. And I don’t think it’s right,” Trump commented on the issue.
Paul Manafort faces 305 years of imprisonment for money-laundering and activity as an unregistered foreign agent. It should be noted that Manafort was the advisor of Ukraine’s former president Viktor Yanukovych. According to the indictment, he acted as a foreign agent in favor of Party of Regions (pro-Russia political party of Ukraine created in late 1997, - ed.). According to the documents, Manafort received more than $12 million from the Party of Regions from 2007 – 2009.
Paul Manafort and his business partner Richard W. Gates were officially indicted on 12 counts including a conspiracy against the United States of America, conspiracy to launder money, violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, as well as provision of false statements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act and non-reporting of foreign bank accounts. According to the indictment, he “acted as an agent of overseas representatives on behalf of the government of Ukraine, the Party of Regions and Viktor Yanukovych”.
Both Manafort and Gates were placed under house arrest in October 2017, and consequently released in January 2018.
