Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security, John Bolton accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of concluding a defense contract with Russia in May 2019, while hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans had to endure hunger. Bolton wrote about it on his Twitter page.

“In May, while hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans went hungry, Maduro gave Russia $209 million for a defense contract to buy their continued support,” Bolton noted.

He said Maduro has grossly mismanaged Venezuela’s resources.

Assistant to the President of the United States focused on the fact that Venezuelans want real democratic leadership, not repressions.

In April, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticized Russia for its attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of Venezuela. According to him, thanks to the support of countries such as Russia and China, Maduro still remains in power.

In a phone conversation with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergiy Lavrov, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated Russia’s and Cuba’s interference in Venezuela’s affairs destabilized relationships between the U.S. and Russia, as Spokesperson of the establishment Morgan Ortagus said.

“The Secretary stressed that the intervention by Russia and Cuba is destabilizing for Venezuela and for the U.S.-Russia bilateral relationship. The Secretary noted the Russian Foreign Ministry’s April 30 statement calling for the renunciation of violence and support for Venezuela’s return to stability and prosperity,” the message reads.

Pompeo took into the account the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry as of April 30, who urged to refuse from violence and support stability and prosperity in Venezuela.

“The Secretary urged Russia to cease support for Nicolas Maduro and join other nations, including the overwhelming majority of countries in the Western Hemisphere, who seek a better future for the Venezuelan people,” the Spokesperson stated.
