During the European Union summit in Brussels, French President Emmanuel Macron opposed the start of the negotiation process with Albania and North Macedonia regarding their accession to the EU. DW reported this.

During the six-hour discussion, the Netherlands and Denmark also opposed the start of negotiations with Albania. At the summit, France insisted on the need to reform the procedure of admitting new members to the EU.

Macron’s position has been sharply criticized by many participants in the summit. In particular, German Chancellor Angela Merkel regretted the position of Paris, although she confirmed the need to reform the process of admission to the EU.

At the moment, it is likely that the issue of accession of Albania and North Macedonia to the EU is postponed to the beginning of 2020. The next EU summit will take place in Zagreb, and so this issue can be raised.

Earlier, Emmanuel Macron confirmed the intention to hold the Normandy Format meeting soon during the phone talk with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, as the President’s Office reported.

“Emmanuel Macron confirmed the intentions to hold the meeting in Normandy Format soon,” the message said.

It is noted that the head of the states talked for an hour and a half.

Zelensky and Macron discussed the results of the G7 summit, which took place on August 24-26 in Biarritz, France.

“The Head of State welcomed the position of the summit participants toward the impossibility of Russia’s return to this international platform within the war in Donbas and Russian occupation of Crimea. The Ukrainian President expressed concern over the recent discussion by the Presidents of France and the U.S. of the intentions to invite Russia to the next G7 Summit in the U.S. in 2020,” the message said.
