The presidents of France and the United States, Emmanuel Macron and Joe Biden, will hold a telephone conversation in the coming days on the tense situation due to the cancellation of Australia's defense contract for the construction of submarines. This was stated by the representative of the French government Gabriel Attal, writes DW.
According to him, Macron will demand explanations from Biden about the situation, which Attal described as a “powerful undermining of trust” between the countries. Earlier this week, France announced the recall of its ambassadors from Washington and Canberra for consultations.
It should be noted that Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have announced the creation of a new security partnership - AUKUS. Under the agreement, Australia, in particular, plans to use American and British technology to build at least eight nuclear submarines, as well as re-equip its armed forces with American cruise missiles. Because of this, Canberra terminated its defense contract with France.
