Local elections in the occupied Donbas must be held within the Ukrainian legal framework. Tony Frisch, the Coordinator in the OSCE humanitarian subgroup in Donbas said so in an interview with RIA Novosti news agency.
"First of all, and that was obviously mentioned, the elections must take place and be held based on the laws of Ukraine. Then, obviously, the ceasefire was always a preliminary condition, and there's no ceasefire now", Frisch said.
According to him, there's no certain date of the election, and there will be none - until a stable ceasefire holds in eastern Ukraine.
Frisch admitted that the supervision over the election has to be based on the same principles as these during the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
"OSCE has to be there, but the major role here does not belong to the OSCE, and it's the sides that should be making the decision on the procedure. The decision must be made based on the laws of Ukraine, like I said", he added.
Previously, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the election in Donbas should be held in autumn 2020, along with the nation-wide local elections.
