The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a protest note to the Belarusian Embassy in Vilnius in connection with the temporary unilateral closure of the border. This is stated in the message of the press service of the Lithuanian MFA.
The protest note of the Belarusian diplomatic mission was handed over "in connection with the violation of the agreement between the government of Lithuania and the government of Belarus on checkpoints across the state border."
Lithuanian diplomats note that Belarus unilaterally closed the border with Lithuania on Thursday afternoon, without informing Lithuania and without starting the procedures stipulated by the bilateral agreement. The document calls for clarification of this violation of the bilateral agreement and to ensure that this does not happen again.
On October 29 it was reported that Belarus restricts entry into its territory through ground checkpoints for certain categories of individuals from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine. As noted, the restrictions are temporary and are associated "with the current epidemic situation in neighboring countries."
The restrictions do not apply to employees of diplomatic missions and consular offices documented by diplomatic and service passports, drivers of vehicles intended for international road transport, members of train and locomotive brigades of international railway traffic.
