The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a note of protest to Belarus in connection with the planned launch of the second unit of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP), which is located 50 km from Vilnius, the press service of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.

"The launch of the second Unit of the Belarusian NPP will double the nuclear and environmental safety threats to Lithuania and other countries in the region. Thus, Belarus is required to refrain from this decision that is irresponsible and increases the threats," the message reads.

Vilnius also demanded to stop the operation of the first unit of the Belarusian NPP until "all modern nuclear safety requirements are met".

The protest note says that Belarus' decision to build a nuclear power plant near the Lithuanian state border, near Vilnius, has been and will always be a top issue, while there are many other unresolved security issues.

As it was repored, in November 2020 the president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko personally opened BelNPP. He then noted that this station is historically important for the country. The first power unit of BelNPP was included in the unified power system of the country on November 3. In the three days since the connection to the integrated power system with the NPP, more than 22 million kWh of electricity were released. According to the test programs, the capacity of the power unit was planned to be gradually increased to the design capacity - 1,190 MW.

Almost immediately, the station suspended its work due to the need to replace certain equipment.
