The law of Ukraine, which bans public use, demonstration, production and promotion of the Saint George’s ribbon, has been published in the Parliament’s official newspaper. Thus, the bill will take force on Thursday, June 15.

Previously, President Poroshenko signed the respective bill and sent it to the Parliament. 238 Ukrainian MPs supported the document. It foresees the fine of approximately USD 100 (first time of violating the law), maximum USD 200 (for the repeated violations). Trespassers may also face 15 days-long imprisonment.

During events of 2014 in Ukraine it was used by Antimaidan activists and pro-Russian population of Ukraine (especially in the south-east regions) as a symbol of pro-Russian and separatist sentiment. The ribbon is also worn by members of the paramilitary units of the self-styled Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. Euromaidan activists and their supporterts sometimes make derogatory reference to the Ribbon of Saint George as the "Colorado Ribbon", as the colors of the ribbon coincide with the colors of a Colorado potato beetle.

The Ukrainian government replaced the ribbon with a red-and-black remembrance poppy, like those associated with Remembrance Day in Western Europe in 2014; red and black are also the colors used by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army during the conflict.
