The law on the impeachment of President of Ukraine is just another PR move of the government. Viktor Medvedchuk, the Chairman of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party said so during an evening show at 112 Ukraine TV channel.
The politician paid attention to the speed that the MPs showed when passing this law.
'The thing is, this entire draft law is just a name, "a law about the president's impeachment". It's another PR move of the current government, and I would not like to slam this government on many issues, including this one, without any grounds and reasons", Medvedchuk said, adding that, according to social surveys, the voters demanded to cancel the immunity of MPs and president alike.
"If we consider it (the law, - 112 International) in this context of demands and wishes of our voters, it has absolutely nothing to do with what I said", the politician claimed.
Medvewchuk reiterated that since the day when the Constitution was passed, Article 111 stated that the impeachment of President as a direct action norm.
"And even if we had no laws, the mechanism would be still working, because it foresaw the procedure and regulation of the issue of the impeachment of president", he said, adding that the law on regulation contained an entire chapter about the impeachment of the president.
Medvedchuk is convinced that the law is nothing but a PR move, which was made in breach of the regulation law and the Constitution.
"Opposition Platform - For Life that I represent here imposed a draft bill, which is an initiative for discussions, and placed it on the website; it concerns canceling the president's immunity, which means changes to Article 105 and cancelation of Article 111 ("Impeachment of the President"), he said, adding that the draft law would not be passed.
"It won't happen because the government took another path, the path of flogging; it's like "you wanted impeachment - well, then, here's your law", he said.
Earlier on September 10, the Ukrainian Parliament gave 245 votes for the impeachment law; all voters but one represented Servant of the People party.
