Latvia builds 93 km-section of fence with barbed wire on border with Russia

Latvia has finished construction of the 93-kilometer-long section of the fence with the barbed wire on the border with Russia. Kristina Petersone, the press secretary of Latvian State Border Guard said that as quoted by Diena

The draft project, which stipulates building the 183.6-kilometer-long fence, also includes an entire system of wooden sidewalks, patrol huts and water pipes. The fence's height makes 2.7 meters. The overall price of the construction works is 21,168 million Euros.

The construction works on the borderline wall are supposed to be complete in 2020.

The border guards indicate that the violations' rate has dropped in the sections, where the fence was set. Currently, the authority insists that the additional funds are needed to build another 100 kilometers of the fence. The money has not been allocated yet.

The Latvian government also plans to build the fence on the border with Belarus, which is supposed to be instrumental in combating the inflow of illegal migrants.
