Human rights activists put a temporary sticker that looked as a crack on the Druzhby Narodiv Arch (the Arch of Friendship of Nations, - 112 International) in Kyiv. It appeared to be a sign of support for political prisoners who are illegally detained in Russia and annexed Crimea, reports Hromadske.
According to the organizers, the action aims to draw attention to the fate of Ukrainian citizens, imprisoned by Russia for political reasons, as well as to urge everyone on whom it depends to make as much effort as possible to free the hostages of the Kremlin.
"The crack on the Arch of Friendship of Nations symbolizes one of the problems that exist today - these are Ukrainian political prisoners. But behind it are also the occupation of Crimea and Russian aggression in Donbas. The idea came when we thought how to draw attention to the problem of political prisoners - then starving Sentsov, Balukh, and other Ukrainians who are illegally detained. It was back in September, but we spent a lot of time on various permits and arrangements with the State Committee on Emergency Situations. Therefore, we did it only now,” said one of the organizers Maria Tomak.
"Action is an act of solidarity with illegally persecuted citizens of Ukraine, whom Russia turns into a weapon in its hybrid war, solidarity with civilians in the territories seized by the Russian Federation, a gesture-response to the war unleashed and supported by the neighbor-imperialist in eastern Ukraine," said in joint statement of the organizers of the action.
The Arch of Friendship of Nations was established in honor of the 'unification of Ukraine with Russia', a reference to the agreement that was adopted in 1654.
