Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba spoke about the reason for the conflict with Hungary, related to the rights of Hungarians in Zakarpattya. This was discussed in Kuleba's interview to Ukraine 24 channel.
"Hungary felt at ease in Zakarpattya due to the fact that for more than 20 years the central government paid little attention to the situation there. The situation changed in 2017, when the establishment of the correct balance and leveling of the situation began. What we are seeing now is a continuation of this process", said the head of Ukrainian diplomacy.
According to him, Ukraine regularly reminds Hungary about the borders of what is permitted in Zakarpattya, which cannot be crossed.
“We have a very simple approach. I always tell my Hungarian colleague about this: we understand that you are worried about the fate of ethnic Hungarians on the territory of Ukraine, you have the right to take care of them, but you must do this within the red lines defined by the Ukrainian legislation. Sometimes they overshadow these lines," explained the minister.
It is worth noting that relations between Ukraine and Hungary have repeatedly aggravated due to disagreements over the vision of how the rights of Hungarians should be respected in Zakarpattya.
As you know, Hungary has vetoed all decisions in NATO since September 2017 regarding deepening cooperation with Ukraine, and also blocks dialogue at the political level.
In particular, Budapest requires the Ukrainian authorities to solve problems with the issue of education and the law on the use of the state language.
