Putin and Zelensky hold first phone conversation on de-escalation

For the first time, President Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The conversation happened upon the initiative of the Ukrainian side. This was reported by Putin's Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, Interfax news agency informed.

“The issues of adjustment in the south-east [of Ukraine] and cooperation to return the detained people from both sides were discussed,” he said.

Later, it was specified that the politicians discussed the release of 24 Ukrainian sailors detained in the Kerch Strait in November 2018.

Putin and Zelensky came to an agreement to continue the work on the expert level. Besides, state leaders talked about continued cooperation in the Normandy format.

The Office of Ukraine’s President did not give any official comments.
