Kremlin accuses U.S. senators of interference in elections of Interpol’s head

Kremlin deems the actions of the U.S. senators to be the interference in the international organization elections. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson of the Russian President Vladimir Putin made such statement as TASS reported.

“The peculiar interference in the election process, election to the international organization. Here is the visible evidence (of the interference, - Nevertheless, the elections will take place, let’s wait for the result,” he said.

Earlier four U.S. senators urged President Donald Trump and Interpol General Assembly to stand against the appointment of Aleksandr Prokopchuk as the head of the organization. The elections of the new head of Interpol are scheduled for November 21. Interpol has to re-elect the chairman of the organization after its head Meng Hongwei went missing. Therefore, it was reported that China conducts an investigation on him concerning corruption.

Major General of the Russian police Aleksandr Prokopchuk is a favorite on the elections of Interpol’s head. In 2006 - 2011, he served a deputy head of National Central Bureau of Interpol of Russia’s Internal Ministry. Then, he became the head of this organization. In 2016, the Major General became the Vice-President of Interpol.

Arsen Avakov, Ukraine’s Internal Minister, thinks that Russia’s perspective to head the Interpol is a threat to the entire world as Russia is an aggressor state.

On November 19, it was reported that Ukraine will consider the termination of membership in Interpol if Russian Aleksandr Prokopchuk becomes the president of the organization.
