Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko met with Cindy McCain, the wife of U.S. Senator John McCain, and the delegation of the International Republican Institution (IRI) and the John McCain Institute of the Arizona University. The delegation, a member of which is Cindy McCain will monitor the democratic procedure during the presidential elections in Ukraine on March 31. The press service of Kyiv mayor reported that.
“I am very grateful that the U.S. Senator always supported Ukraine, he visited Maidan during the Revolution of Dignity in order to express his support to Ukraine. I am happy that I knew him and that I got the chance to communicate with him. The person is alive as long as the people remember them. We will always remember John McCain who was a dear friend to Ukraine”, Klitschko said during the meeting.
Cindy McCain thanked the Kyiv mayor for good words and for being a good friend to her late husband. “He always loved Ukraine and its people, he cared about its destiny as well. I believe we should continue to support Ukraine. That is why I am here today. I am here in order to support Ukraine”, John McCain's widow stated.
The IRI delegation will observe the democratic process during the voting - not only in Kyiv, but in other cities as well.
Vitaliy Klitschko informed the representatives of the organization about positive changes that happened in Kyiv over the last five years. The mayor emphasized the challenges Ukraine faced during the elections campaign, as the populism level of separate politicians grew as well as the desire of Ukraine’s enemies to destabilize the situation in the country.
“The key moment is not who will become the next president. The key moment is to secure the democratic and pro-European way for Ukraine. We will continue to follow the European way of development in order to make our country strong, successful and democratic state, an equal member of the European Union”, - Klitschko outlined.
According to the report, Cindy McCain invited Vitaliy Klitschko to Washington to communicate with U.S. politicians and senators about the challenges Ukraine faced and its future. She also pointed out that Klitschko was the best promoter of Ukraine because foreigners still listened to him.
