Kazakh government resigns amidst mass protests

The Cabinet of Kazakhstan has filed a resignation letter, and President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev accepted it. TASS reported that on January 5. 

First Deputy Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov will now serve as the Acting Premier until the new Prime Minister takes the office. Presidential aide Erlan Karin is appointed State Secretary. 

Members of the government will keep working until the new composition of the Cabinet is approved.

As is known, street protests began in Kazakhstan, as people demanded to cut the price of liquefied gas. These demands grew more serious, as protesters began to call for president and government's resignation. Some people were arrested, and law enforcers called in military vehicles for riot control.

Kasym-Jomart Tokayev announced a state of emergency in the capital city of Almaty and Mangistau region. On January 5, he is supposed to consider the demands of protesters.
