Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Takashi Kurai promised that in the near future Ukraine will receive an experimental Japanese drug Favipiravir (Avigan), which can help in the treatment of coronavirus. The ambassador said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
“We are very pleased that the Cabinet of Ministers has finally made an official decision to receive drugs with the common name favipiravir. The Japanese side was ready six months ago, and we will be able to send them to Ukraine in the near future, as soon as there is a corresponding order of the Ukrainian government for the embassy in Tokyo and an exchange of necessary documents with the Japanese Foreign Ministry will take place," said Kurai.
He noted that 12 200 tablets will be allocated for Ukraine.
At the same time, the ambassador stressed that favipiravir in Japan has not yet been officially recognized as a cure for COVID-19. But Japan provides it free of charge to countries that are willing to jointly conduct this clinical trial and share its results. At the same time, the Japanese authorities do not require Ukraine to participate in a clinical trial when supplying an experimental drug.
