Italy considers Ukraine as a safe country, which reduces the chances for Ukrainians to get political asylum there. The list of "safe countries" was presented by Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, Deutsche welle reports.

"There are 13 countries on this list, including Ukraine, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Senegal, Cape Verde, Ghana, Kosovo, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia," the statement said.

According to Di Maio, the time limit for considering asylum applications will now be reduced from two years to four months.

Migrants from these countries will be deemed not entitled to protection. Thus, if the Ukrainians, for example, wish to obtain political refugee status in Italy, they will most likely be denied. According to Italian Minister of Justice Alfonso Bonafade, such citizens will face deportation in the absence of evidence that their life in their homeland is indeed at risk.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, almost 71 million people around the world do not live in their homes due to wars, persecution and other threats.
