The authorities of autocratic states and various special services used Israeli Pegasus software to spy on the activists, journalists, and oppositionists as Washington Post and Deutsche Welle reported.

The list of telephones that were traced by this software includes 50,000 numbers that are concentrated in the countries that use to spy on their citizens and they were the clients of the Israeli NSO Group Company.

Over 1,000 cases were reported when the owners of the phone numbers were identified. The list includes senior politicians, lawyers, journalists, and human rights activists from France, the U.S., India, Morocco, Mexico, Hungary, including Azerbaijani opposition journalists Khadija Ismayilova and Sevindzh Vagifgyzy, as well as two women close to killed Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

This list also includes phone numbers of members of Arabian royal families, 65 businessmen, 85 human rights activists, 189 journalists, and over 600 politicians and officials, including ministers, diplomats, and military. Besides, it has the numbers of some heads of the states and prime ministers.

The spyware of the military level licensed by the Israeli company for governments to spy on terrorists and criminals was used in attempts and successful hacks of 37 smartphones.

Israeli NSO Group stated that it does not govern spyware aiming at clients and it does not have access to collected data.

Pegasus Trojan horse can immediately install on the phone of the victim, a person should only tap the link sent by perpetrators. Then, the user of the software receives access to all files, apps, cameras, and microphones of the smartphone. This software exists since 2016.

In Denmark, a 36-year-old Russian man was sentenced to three years in prison for spying for Russia. The decision was made by a unanimous trial court in Aalborg on Monday, May 10.
