During the period from 2004 from 2020, the U.S. government sent Ukraine 68 million dollars for the purpose of destruction of old small arms, light weaponry and ammunition, and the clearance of combat area on its territory. US Department of the State mentioned that in the report called To Walk the Earth in Safety.
According to the estimates of NSPA (NATO Agency for Procurement and Support), in 2005, Ukraine stored up to seven million of small arms and light weapons, and up to two million tons of ammunition in 80 storage sites. Most of this ammunition is considered obsolete, aging, potentially unstable and unfit for further use. They are considered a serious threat to national, regional and global security.
The ongoing conflict in Donbas led to the emergency of contact line in Donetsk and Luhansk region. The density of mine fields and sites with live explosives is considerable. It is a threat for thousands of Ukrainians living in the conflict zone.
In 2020 alone, 16 civilians and 12 military servicemen deceased due to stepping on explosives. 68 civilians and 39 military people were wounded for the same reason.
Last year, US Department of the State supported HALO Trust, Danish Demining Group and OSCE to facilitate the mine clearing works in Ukraine.
