The illegal election in the occupied Donbas may become the starting point of the new armed Russian aggression in Ukraine. Volodymyr Yelchenko, the country's permanent envoy in the UN said that at the UN Security Council session as quoted by Interfax news agency.

The agenda of the Council's session was focused on the ongoing aggression in eastern Ukraine. As the discussion was in progress, Yelchenko said that 'there are signs that the these so-called 'elections' could become the starting point for the new sequence of the armed aggression'.

The Ukrainian diplomat underlined that the local election in Donbas should take place solely under the Ukrainian law.

He also turned the audience's attention to the ongoing breaches of the UN Convention on Maritime Law, committed by Russia. 'Over the past six months, Russia halted over 200 vessels on their way to the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk', he said.

Besides, during the UN Security Council session, eight EU member countries urged Russia to stop preparations for the illegal election in the occupied territories of Ukraine. The joint statement signed by these countries' representatives claimes that the 'elections' are not in line with Minsk agreements and violate the Ukrainian law.
