Foreign Minister of Hungary Peter Szijjarto claimed that the issuance of the Hungarians passports to the citizens of Ukraine does not contradict the Ukrainian laws as DW reported.
“The Hungarians, who, according to the Hungarian law have a right for the dual citizenship, live in Zakarpattia. If you look at the Ukrainian law, there is nothing about the fact that it is crime to have the passport of another country or it is banned,” the minister said.
He also answered the question of whether the Hungarian passports were issued to the Ukrainian officials:
“Honestly, I do not know.”
“It is not important in Hungary whether a person is official or not to get the second citizenship,” he added.
The Article 4 of the Constitution of Ukraine provides only one citizenship. At the same time the law defines the only possible citizenship as the citizenship of Ukraine, which excludes the possibility of the presence of other forms of the citizenship of administrative ot territorial units of Ukraine. Besides, the law of Ukraine on the state service defines the acquisition of the citizenship of another state as the basis for the stop of the state service.
As we reported, Hungary has changed the name of “the minister for Zakarpattia.” The decision was published by the Hungarian Justice Ministry on October 29.
Earlier, Ukrinform agency published a video where a few Ukrainians receive the Hungarian passports and owe allegiance to Hungary in the Consulate in Berehove, Zakarpattia region, western Ukraine. The Hungarian diplomat recommended not to inform the Ukrainian authorities about receiving the new documents.
