Peter Szijarto, Hungary’s foreign minister visits Ukraine with a short working visit on Monday; the Ukrainian media expect he’s going to negotiate with Hennadiy Moskal, the head of Ukraine’s most western region of Zakarpattya. According to Mukachevo.Today, the local news agency, the topic would be the situation that now takes place, due to approving of the Law on Education in Ukraine.
While the Ukrainian side explains there is no threat to the rights of national minorities in Ukraine, the Hungarian official decisively protested against the law, saying it violates the rights of local children to be taught in their native language. Szijarto has repeatedly said he takes the changes in the new law as ‘disgraceful and unacceptable’.
Other EU officials have also expressed concern and disapproval of the newly approved document; Secretary General of the European Council Thorbjorn Jagland said that the bill created the ‘least favorable conditions for the national minorities to get the education in their native language.’
According to Ukraine’s Education and Science Minister Liliya Hrynevych, Ukraine and Hungary are to hold the full-fledged consultations on the issue on October 19.
