Russia's State Duma

Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Viacheslav Volodin condemned the intention of the Ukrainian authorities to start criminal prosecution of MPs from the Opposition Platform - For Life party who visited Moscow. As reported on the website of the Russian Parliament, Volodin noted that the initiators of the criminal case against Ukrainian deputies proposing a dialogue within the parliamentary dimension of the Normandy format, in this case, should bring to justice Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a member of the Normandy Four.

According to Volodin, the initiators of the criminal case against the Ukrainian parliamentarians because of their meeting with Russian MPs to negotiate a settlement of the conflict in Donbas are destroying the agreements that exist within the framework of the Normandy format.

This is a blow to the parliamentary dimension of the Normandy format and an attempt to disrupt this dialogue,” Volodin said.

“But in this case, the opponents of the settlement of the situation need to understand that first of all they must bring to criminal responsibility their president Zelensky, who himself participates in the development of agreements in the Normandy format at the level of heads of state,” the head of State Duma noted.

"We believe that this dialogue within the parliamentary dimension of the Normandy format is needed, and after the pandemic ends, it should be continued with the participation of the deputies of France and Germany," the head of the State Duma added.

“The topic of our meeting with our Ukrainian colleagues in March was the question of creating a parliamentary dimension of the Normandy format. The arrival in Moscow was a courageous and responsible step on the part of the Verkhovna Rada MPs. They expressed their readiness to jointly seek solutions aimed at achieving peace and implementing the Minsk agreements. This is important, first of all, for Ukraine itself, where the civil conflict has not stopped for the seventh year," Volodin said.

"Our European partners, the parliamentary structures of the EU countries should give an appropriate assessment of Kyiv's actions," he added.

"For its part, Russia remains open to dialogue with all sound political forces of Ukraine, advocating a peaceful settlement and an early end to the civil confrontation in the Donbas," Volodin stressed.
