Pentagon Chief Ashton Carter said that the US does not want confrontation with Russia, but it will ensure the security of its allies in the face of the Russian threat.
Carter said, speaking at the forum on national defense.
"We do not aspire to treat Russia as an enemy, but we will defend our allies and world order," he said.
Carter called Russia's actions in Syria counterproductive, accusing the Russian Federation in the discharge of the nuclear threat, the aggressive intentions with regard to Ukraine and the Baltic countries. Russian provocations that are taking place in recent years "is not what the world expects from the responsible parties in the 21st century."
More than 25 years ago NATO did not have the task to engage in containment on the eastern flank, but now it has it, Carter stressed.
He also noted the need to strengthen the armed forces, in order to make everybody understand: "If they start a war, we will win."
