The United States are from now on focused on something different than removing Bashaar al-Assad from power in the war-torn Syria. Nikki Haley, the permanent U.S. representative in the United Nations, said this as quoted by Reuters.

According to her, Trump’s administration does not fully agree with EU leaders, most of which consider it is necessary that Assad leaves his office.

'Do we think he's a hindrance? Yes. Are we going to sit there and focus on getting him out? No', she said. 'What we are going to focus on is putting the pressure in there so that we can start to make a change in Syria. Our priority is to really look at how we get things done, who we need to work with to really make a difference for the people in Syria'.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited Turkey and stressed that Assad's longer-term status 'will be decided by the Syrian people'.
