António Guterres was sworn in as the new head of the United Nations. It was reported by the AFP news agency.


Guterres was elected for a term, which begins on January 1, 2017 and ends on 31 December, 2021.

Guterres was the prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. From 2005 to 2015 he held the post of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

UN Secretary-General is elected for a term of five years with the possibility of re-election. Ban Ki-moon was in that position since 2007.
