The Syrian government asks members of the UN Security Council to gather for an urgent session over the highly disputed issue of the Golan Heights. AFP news agency reported this via Twitter on Wednesday.
Recently, U.S. leader Donald Trump signed the declration that recognized Israel's sovereignty over this disputed area. This, however, met strong resistance of the EU and Canada.
Ukraine also stated it abided by the several resolutions of the UN Security Council, which set the status of the Golan Heights as 'Israeli-occupied territory'. 'Ukraine has been adhering to the UN Statute, living up to the UN Security Council decisions', Kateryna Zelenko, the ministry's spokeswoman stated.
The Resolution No.497, passed in 1981 specifically states that 'Israel's decision to set its own laws, jurisdiction and government on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is ineffective and has no international legal force'.
The Ukrainian official admitted that Ukraine continues to 'consistently stand for the achievements of comprehensive peace regulation in the Middle East, taking into account the legitimate interests of Israel's security'.
