German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Ukraine said that Germany is ready to support sanctions against Nord Stream 2 if Russia starts using the pipeline as a weapon. Merkel said this during a joint briefing with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to her, Nord Stream 2 is not a Russian-German project, it is a European-Russian project.
“We take the concern from the Ukrainian side seriously and clearly said that, within the European framework, we are in favor of new sanctions if Russia tries to use the gas pipeline for weapons purposes,” she said.
At the same time, Merkel said that she is in favor of an early extension of the agreement on gas transit through Ukraine after 2024.
In turn, Zelensky once again stressed that Nord Stream 2 is a weapon, not an economic project.
“I believe that this is a weapon, and not noticing this is not correct. I believe that it is so dangerous, even now, without launching it, we see who controls gas prices in Europe and how they jump up. The launch will lead to great risks, and this will play into the hands of Russia, "the president said.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that while there is no progress in Normandy format, pressure on the Russian Federation from other countries should remain. Zelensky said this during a joint briefing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
