Christian Social Unions, headed by Chancellor Angela Merkel, does not intend to refuse to participate in the Nord Stream 2 construction project, Bloomberg reports.
It is noted that the chancellor was called upon to abandon the gas pipeline after it was established that they tried to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny with Novichok agent.
However, "neither Merkel’s Christian Democratic-led bloc nor her Social Democratic partner is likely to rally around the demand, according to three Bundestag officials, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the discussions," the agency stressed.
Sources of the publication in the Bundestag point to three reasons for this decision by Merkel and her supporters.
As we reported earlier, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel confirmed the intention of her government to continue and finish the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which shareholder is Gazprom.
“We also consider illegal these extraterritorial sanctions, in other words, sanctions that go beyond the territory of the U.S.,” the chancellor said.
Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline plays an important role in the economy of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state. The shipment of pipelines takes place in Sassnits port; while the Russian gas should be supplied to the Lubmin municipality, which is situated in the mentioned state.
