German Chancellor candidates from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Armin Laschet and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Olaf Scholz reacted to Ukraine's plans to join NATO, DW reports.

The politicians said they could not make statements about the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO.

"This can be frivolously promised. However, the reality looks different," Laschet said.

According to him, when it comes to such a large country as Ukraine, then it is necessary to ensure that the same legal norms operate in its east as in Western Europe.

Laschet also rejected the possibility of supplying German weapons to Ukraine.

At the same time, Scholz noted that the EU must first carry out internal reforms, and added that Ukraine's membership in NATO has not yet been discussed.

Three weeks ago, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov expressed the opinion that Germany and France should be responsible for the occupation of Crimea, since in 2008 they refused the MAP to Ukraine and Georgia.

Later, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba rebuked NATO for its inaction in implementing the decision of the 2008 Bucharest summit to grant Ukraine membership in the alliance.
